Book condoning murder has another rabbi in hot water

The police’s Unit of International Crime Investigations on Thursday detained rabbi Yitzhak Ginsburg, the president of the Od Yosef Chai yeshiva in the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar in connection to a book that condoned the killing of non-Jews.

Ginsburg was detained for questioning days after the alleged author of the book, rabbi Yitzhak Shapira was arrested for inciting to violence. Shapira is also a rabbi at the Od Yosef Chai yeshiva.

The book, named “The King’s Torah,” deems the killing of non-Jews who threaten Israel as legal. “It is permissible to kill the Righteous among Nations even if they are not responsible for the threatening situation,” the book says, adding: “If we kill a Gentile who has sinned or has violated one of the seven commandments – because we care about the commandments – there is nothing wrong with the murder.”

Ginsburg, who recommended the book to his students, is a follower of Chabad. He has faced prosecution in the past for incitement to racism after having published a book insisting that there is no place for Arabs in the state of Israel. The charges were dropped after Ginsburg issued a clarification letter.

Ginsburg is a well known radical in his views on Israel’s Arab public. The police declined to comment on the ongoing investigation against him.

The Od Yosef Chai yeshiva issued a letter on Thursday condemning the police, saying that in any other enlightened country it would be inconceivable to question such an admirable man as rabbi Ginsburg.

Egypt oil spill threatens Red Sea marine life

An oil spill off the Egyptian Red Sea coast of Hurghada threatening to damage marine life in the area has promptedenvironmental agencies to demand tighter regulation of offshore oil platforms.

Large quantities of oil have appeared in recent days around the resorts of Hurghada which draw millions of tourists who come to dive or snorkle, according to the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Agency.

“It started four or five days ago and the companies responsible didn’t notify anyone. It is catastrophic,” HEPCA Managing Director Amr Ali told AFP.

The spill was caused by leakage from an offshore oil platform north of Hurghada and has polluted protected areas and showed up on tourist beach resorts.

“The companies have said they will pay damages, but it is the environmental damage that we are concerned about,” Ali said, declining to name the companies for legal reasons.

“We will take all measures, including legal, to make sure this does not happen again,” he said.

HEPCA’s warning comes amid ongoing efforts to contain the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which has already damaged fragile ecosystems along the US south coast and halted the region’s multi-billion-dollar fishing industry.

HEPCA, a non-governmental organisation based in Hurghada, has been working for the protection of natural resources in the Red Sea.

Egypt’s environment and tourism ministries said the oil spill was contained and that measures were being taken to “deal with the pollution caused by the spill,” the official MENA news agency reported.

Authorities protective of the lucrative tourism industry were eager to resolve the matter quickly. Both the Environment Minister Maged George and Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmy visited the area of the spill on Saturday.

But HEPCA says it was too little too late.

“Visits won’t help. We would like to see a clearer plan of action on the ground,” Ali said.

“We would also like to see more stringent standards imposed on these offshore platforms to ensure naturalareas are protected,” he said.

Oil leak is 5 times greater than reported by officials

The amount of oil gushing from BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil disaster is five times more than what the oil company and the U.S. Coast Guard are currently estimating, said a Florida State University oceanography professor on Saturday.

At an oil spill environmental forum at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front, Ian MacDonald said the blowout is gushing 25,000 barrels a day.

The Coast Guard and BP estimate 5,000 barrels a day of crude is spewing into the Gulf.

MacDonald said his estimate is based on satellite images and government maps forecasting the slick’s trajectory.

MacDonald also told a crowd of about 100 gathered for the discussion that he’s been frustrated by the lack of data from federal responders and BP since the April 20 explosion and subsequent spill.

Dick Snyder, director of the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation at the University of West Florida, said satellite imagery and maps give a misleading picture of the spread of the spill.

Chemical dispersants and exposure to sunlight have made some of the oil nearly invisible and hard to detect, he said.

Testing seawater for a hydrocarbon signature is needed to adequately track the oil spill so cleanup operations can be activated before it arrives, Snyder said.

A proposal by UWF to conduct such testing off the Pensacola coast was rejected by the state Department of Environmental Protection, Snyder said.

Both Snyder and MacDonald are members of the newly created Oil Spill Academic Task Force.

The organization brings together resources of Florida’s academic institutions to assist the state of Florida and the Gulf region in preparing for and responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The task force consists of scientists and scholars working in collaboration with colleges from the State University System as well as private colleges.

Proof that vulcanic ash comes from a Nordic god

*I found this one amusing, had to post it.*

For those who doubt the veracity of my blog yesterday suggesting that the Icelanders had summued up some kind of Nordic god in revenge for Britain’s use of strong armed tactics to extract compensation over the Icesave collapse, take a look at the following photograph.

Incredible it may seem, but taken by the Icelandic coast guard a few days back using special cameras, it shows the three main vents of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. If this is not the face of some fallen deity summoned up from the undeworld, I don’t know what is.

Emergency Help Desperately Needed to Heat Homes on the Pine Ridge Reservation

I found out about this critical emergency situation through a filmmaker friend named Preston Randolph, who became involved in helping the Indians on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota while working on a documentary there.

People on this reservation, particularly the elderly, are literally in danger of freezing to death this winter because they can’t pay their heating bills. Some of these people not only have no heat, but can’t even cook because they also rely on propane for cooking. (See below for an article written by Preston describing, firsthand, the conditions on the reservation.)

Ways you can help:

Call the Lakota Plains Propane Company at 605-867-5199 or 605-455-1188 and directly pay for someone’s propane delivery. There is a $120 minimum for a propane delivery. My friend, Kean University professor Dr. Norma Bowe, who introduced me to Preston a few months ago, has paid for the propane deliveries for three people, and tells me that this was very easy to do. The people at the propane company know which customers are in need and whose bills to apply the money to, and gave Norma the names of the individuals whose bills she was paying. (I realize that a lot of us, including myself, might not be able to come up with the entire $120 minimum to get a delivery to someone, so do what I’m doing and go halfsies with someone else, or get a few people to chip in.)

An emergency assistance fund has also been set up by the tribe that will be used exclusively for heating costs — electric, propane, fuel oil, and firewood. Donations in any amount can be sent to:

Dean Patton, Treasurer
Oglala Sioux Tribe
P.O. Box 2070
Pine Ridge, South Dakota 57770

Unfortunately, according to a press release issued by the Oglala Sioux Tribe, there have been scammers soliciting donations on the internet, claiming to be raising money for the Pine Ridge Reservation, so, if you want to help, please be sure to do it via one of the two ways above.

TRAVESTY ON THE HOME FRONT

By Preston Randolph
Recently the world was faced with the challenge of bonding together and helping the country of Haiti fight through the terror of a natural disaster. As a result, the world has now been exposed to the extreme poverty and poor living conditions of this area. This shocking reality served as a motivation for all people to lend a helping hand.

Without the earthquake, who would have lent a hand in help to the poorest country in the world? The starving people of Haiti, in all likelihood, would have not seen a dime from the average American because people are simply not informed of the tragedies that occur every day around us. We either just don’t know or maybe we just don’t care. Now after a horrifying disaster people have stepped to the plate to help those in need, but it simply is too late for the thousands who perished in this freak event. We as a nation seem to realize these struggles once they come to a head. Did we care about the structure of buildings and the living conditions of the people of Haiti before the Earthquake? Did we care about the poverty stricken minorities and the height of the Levees before Katrina? We help once people die, but by then it is just too late. Furthermore, most Americans are completely oblivious to the abstract and harsh poverty right here at home. The ignorance of these issues by the American people is only proven when you start mentioning the horrors going on at Indian Reservations across the Dakotas.

I started collecting winter supplies two months ago for the Pine Ridge Reservation, which is home to the Lakota Nation. The current film I am producing exposed me to these issues, which made we want to do my part. During the winter months many of Pine Ridge’s citizens freeze and starve. When I say “freeze” I do not mean chilly, but actually freezing to death. The extreme poverty on the reservation and horrendous living conditions combined with the “illegal” shutting off of power to homes sheltering elderly and children result in the actual deaths by hypothermia. Even at this point, as you are reading this, people are freezing on the Reservation.

After weeks of hard work, I had managed to gather hundreds of new coats, blankets, hats, gloves, and boots. Last Friday at 3 a.m. I loaded up a U-Haul trailer and drove the eight hours to Pine Ridge. As I entered the reservation and approached the city limits I was greeted with the sight of the poorest community in the United States. Three feet of snow covered the ground as the unplowed roads formed a muddy environment. Just outside the city I passed an eroding bar giving spirits to those who already live in an area where nine of 10 families are affected by alcoholism. It was only a mile or so back that I saw a dual-sided billboard giving face to two young Native Americans recently killed in an alcohol related accident.

I drove throughout the Reservation, passing people walking fifteen mile stretches in the cold because of high fuel prices and the lack of transportation. Stray, hungry dogs roamed the muddy, snowy streets looking for scraps to survive. Broken windows breathed cold air into the shack-like shelters or homes of the 30,000 people living on the Reservation.

I gave the materials to a family that I had been in contact with and was welcomed with smiles as I filled their living room with the 30 boxes of supplies. They in turn would distribute the materials throughout the Reservation. I then left and drove through the town, passing the people who have experienced hell arguably since the white man arrived in 1492, but more specifically these are the faces that experience this hell in the United States in 2010.

The smiles of the children on the streets, playing in the snow wearing torn coats, if they have one at all, brought tears to my eyes. This existence is all they know and chances are this is all they will ever know. These are the children that will go to the school that uses materials that are decades old and have a teacher turnover rate that is 800 percent that of the national average. They will be raised alongside their brothers and sisters who all survive on the $3,500 their parents bring in a year. At this point these children, if lucky, will grow into their teenage years. When I say “if lucky” I mean it. The chance of certain diseases and cancers is up to 800 percent higher on the Reservation than the rest of the United States, and the teenage suicide rate is 150 percent higher than the national average. These kids attend school in an environment where 70 percent of those before them dropped out of a system that is in the bottom 10 percent of funding by the US Department of Education. These kids then will face other adversities of trying to find work. They may grasp on to a minimum wage job, but remember the unemployment rate is 80 percent; one of the highest in the nation. This cycle continues and continues, but nothing is done. I can only ask why? Is it that the US Government could care less about the indigenous people, which has been proved the past 200 years? Maybe, it is just that the people of the United States have no idea of what is actually happening inside their country and are confused by the stereotype that America’s Indigenous receive everything from the Government. Wake Up!

I was stopped on the road by two little kids playing in the snow. The little girl had snot frozen to her face below the nose. They were both in ragged, thin coats. They asked what I was pulling in my trailer and then they found out I had coats. They quickly asked for one and told me that what was on their backs was all that they owned. I was thanked by their smiles and it was the best feeling I have ever had. It was a holiday for these kids.

The day after, I returned home. I went back to work and my regular routine. That night I watched TV, ate a filling meal and took my life for granted like many of us so often do. This experience only furthered the premise that the majority of Americans talk about issues like this but wind up doing nothing. We go home and just forget. Many of us think too often about these issues without learning. Too many pray without helping their fellow man. We are facing a national crisis, yet no one knows or even cares. Right now this is a disaster, but who is helping? Let Katrina and Haiti be example to what else can happen if something is not done now. I give thanks to all those who gave to this cause and realized that this cannot be another out of sight, out of mind issue. Americans are in need and I will help, but more importantly, will you?

Israel calls UN Gaza report ‘anti-Semitic’

JERUSALEM — A UN report on Israel’s 22-day offensive against Hamas-controlled Gaza is anti-Semitic, an Israeli government minister said, as the Jewish state prepares to formally respond to its allegations of war crimes.

“The Goldstone Report … and similar reports, are simply a type of anti-Semitism,” Diaspora and Information Minister Yuli Edelstein told the YNet news agency ahead of a trip to New York, where he will present Israel’s rebuttal on Thursday.

YNet’s report suggested the Israeli leadership is planning an all-out attack on the report to coincide with Wednesday’s anniversary of the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz.

“The connection between the Goldstone Report and the international Holocaust memorial day is not an easy thing. On the other hand, however, we must learn the lessons from what happened,” Edelstein said.

“Then too, those who yelled out were told that Hitler is a clown and that all the gloomy predictions of the 1930s were nonsense,” he added.

Israel has sought to discredit the UN report since its release in September, denouncing it as anti-Semitic even though its lead author, South African judge and international war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone, is Jewish.

The report — endorsed by the UN General Assembly in November — accuses both Israel and Palestinian armed groups of having committed war crimes in the Gaza offensive which Israel launched on December 27, 2008.

It also recommended that its conclusions should be referred to the International Criminal Court if Israel and Hamas fail to carry out credible investigations.

Body With ‘Very Long’ Fingers Discovered On Plum Island

PLUM ISLAND, N.Y. (WPIX) – An alleged mutated human body washed ashore on Plumb Island, a small island where the U.S. Government typically studies dangerous animal diseases.

A security guard on foot patrol reportedly discovered the clothed decomposing body Thursday afternoon on the southwest beach area of the island, where access is restricted, police said.

The body was described as that of a white male about 6-feet tall with a large build and “very long” fingers. According to authorities, there were no obvious signs of trauma.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Suffolk County medical examiner in order to determine an exact cause of death.

Plum Island, which is located about 100 miles northeast of New York City in the Long Island Sound, has been called a potential target for terrorists because of its stock of vaccines and diseases.

Israel prevented 17 sight-impaired Gazans from leaving for cornea transplant operations on time

*If this is something you can defend, you are incapable of caring.*

The Israeli authorities at Erez checkpoint this week prevented the exit of 17 sight-impaired patients, suffering from various eye diseases, from the Gaza Strip in order to undergo cornea transplants, a treatment that is not available in the Gaza health system. Because of this delay, the medical window of opportunity to perform the transplants for these patients was closed, because corneas can be transplanted only within the shortest time frame (24-48 hours after they are extracted from the donor’s body). The patients from Gaza whose exit was prevented will therefore have to wait for another donation, which may or may not happen.

At the beginning of the week Physicians for Human Rights – Israel (PHR-Israel) received an appeal from the Musallam Medical Center in Gaza. According to the appeal, a large group of 14 patients from Gaza, who were invited to Ramallah for cornea transplants from Sunday to Wednesday this week (January 3-5, 2010), did not reach their destination. Three other patients approached PHR-Israel separately. The group of patients includes some who were waiting weeks or even months for cornea transplants. The longest wait was 31-year-old S.A., who has been waiting for this operation for three years.

The main Musallam Medical Center in Ramallah this week received two deliveries from the US with dozens of corneas, donated by Tissue Bank International, an American organization that facilitates cornea and tissue transplants. Every year corneas are sent during Christmas break, during which such operations do not take place in the US, as a donation to the Palestinian health system, and dedicated especially to eye patients from Gaza.

The inquiry by the medical center in Ramallah raised the concern that the exit of the patients from Gaza was being prevented by the Israeli authorities, and accordingly PHR-Israel on Sunday made an urgent request to the DCO in Gaza, responsible for issuing exit permits to patients. In its appeal to the DCO, PHR warned that preventing the exit of the vision-impaired patients for eye operations this week will necessarily cause them to lose the opportunity for cornea transplants in the near future, if ever, because the corneas designated for the transplants have a very short expiration date.

Despite this request, the Israeli authorities prevented the exit of the 17 patients for the operation on time. Five patients were not given any answer; two patients were summoned to investigations by the General Security Service (GSS), scheduled for dates later than the cornea expiration dates; two requests were rejected; and eight requests were approved only after media intervention, but after the corneas had already expired.

This case, with its far-reaching consequences for the vision-impaired patients who now lost the opportunity to repair their eyesight, illustrates the many difficulties that face the residents of Gaza who need medical care that is not available in the Gaza Strip. The delays, apathy and rejection by the Israeli authorities, which every month curtail the access of dozens of patients to medical care, had particularly severe significance in this case, because prevention of these patients’ exit from Gaza caused the loss of the corneas (which can be transplanted within no more than 48 hours from the moment of donation). Now the patients will have to wait for another cornea donation, at an unknown time and likelihood.

Therefore, PHR-Israel strongly protests the blatant disregard of the Erez checkpoint authorities for the medical urgency of allowing the exit of patients for cornea transplant operations.
